How to Fix “Repair Needed” on the iPhone

Disclaimer: I share with you this information from personal experience, and if your try this is exclusively your responsibility for any damages your iPhone may have. I am not responsible for anything that may happen for attempting this tutorial.

I came across this problem with an iPhone of a Client. The Repair Needed Screen apeared and when that shows up it something to worry about. I started to search what would be the solution, and many people have this problem and there is no known Fix.

The iPhone i was working had No WiFi , Bluetooth, IMEI , ICCID. The baseband was erased completely and this is very strange thing, and i remember in one forum thread that pspsully (i think thats the correct alias of the hacker) was very impressed with this achievement of Erasing the baseband completely.

I was still having the problem and no solution was near, so i have read that the new firmware 1.1.3 fixed this and i would give it a try, because i didn’t have WiFi to try other methods with SSH and terminal.

So the things that i did where like this Step By Step:

  • I had firmware 1.0.2 with no baseband, WiFi , Bluetooth, IMEI , ICCID
  • The next thing i did, was update the iPhone to firmware 1.1.1, ( try to get your iPhone on DFU mode with INdependence or iBrickr or use the 10 Seconds trick to get iPhone Restore on iTunes)
  • Once i was on firmware 1.1.1 i had no choice but to restore to firmware 1.1.3 because i had no WiFi and when i did the *#307# method the phone freezed because i had no baseband.
  • The next thing is a bit tricky but once i tell you is going to be easy, because i was stuck with some problems.

  • When you downgrade a firmware version the steps are:
  • a) Click on restore with alt key or shift on windows and select the desired firmware (in this case 1.1.3) b) Now that all the process of downgrading is on course an error at the end is going to happen. c) The normal thing to do is shut down iTunes and open INdependence or iBrickr and the iPhones gets out of DFU mode to activation screen.

  • When you are with firmware 1.1.3 you can’t get out of DFU or Restore mode with INdependence or iBrickr.
  • The next thing to effectively downgrade from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 you will need to use the 10 seconds trick. Press sleep and home button for 10 seconds untill power is off, let go the sleep button but keep holding home untill your computer says iPhone in recover mode ( you need your iPhone conected to the computer) use this expample as reference
  • If you don’t use the 10 seconds trick and try to downgrade to 1.1.1 you will get an error (1) and you will be stuck with a 1.1.3 iPhone on recovery mode.
  • These new firmware rewrites all of your file system and restore the baseband and all the missing things (WiFi , Bluetooth, IMEI , ICCID)

  • Now that you Successfully downgraded to 1.1.1 you will need to restore with 1.1.1 firmware. This restore will get you on the Firmware 1.1.1 activation screen and now you may perform the *#307# jailbreakme.com method or any jailbreak method you know.
  • In my experience when i was at this stage the firmware had repaired the Repair Needed screen and now i had chance to Dial and get sound from the Phone (The baseband was restored, previously there was no sound)

I am sure this may help a lot of people that have this problem. Comment here if you are going to try it and if this works for you post so every people can get this post as a reference.

If this tutorial resolved your problem, don’t hesitate and donate whatever amount you wish. Thanks

edit: lotech commented this important thing.

WARNING!!!!!

Ok so to correct that above bit - if you do this process your bootloader will be updated too - which screws you for then downgrading to an unlockable baseband version.
You can still downgrade with the testpoint hack, but that involves pulling apart you iphone.

The Apple Community from sites like Digg and Hackint0sh began to speculate regarding weather this photos are real or not. Lets remember that a lot of people are crossing their fingers too. The release of the new 1.1.3 firmware would be the first step for a software unlock for Out of the Box 1.1.2 iPhones.

They are new features that maybe the real thing or some kind of wishes by the guys that created the photoshop work. We have seen many of those, so lets take the news with caution.

iPhone Sim Free now provides an unlocking solution for the 1.1.1 firmware. If you want a free solution you must need to wait (patience is a virtue right?), but now the iPhone Dev Team decrypted the ramdisk and gain access to the secpacks that means a free unlock coming soon.

iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 = iPhone relock

The new iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 is out, and is only recommended to people that activated the iPhone with AT&T.

If you unlocked your iPhone with AnySIM or iUnlock don´t update and wait for a new jailbreak aplication coming soon.

If you update to this firmware, the iPhone doesn´t get bricked, but it will return your iPhone to the activation screen.

The iPhone Dev Team should get this thing working fast (remember the free unlock?).

The new Firmware upgrades/fixes:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
  • Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
  • Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites of music controls
  • Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
  • Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
  • Stocks and cities in Stocks and Waether can be re-ordered
  • Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
  • Support for TV Out
  • Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
  • New Passcode lock time intervals
  • Adjustable alert volume

Here is a summary of what the firmware update does in different scenarios:

The update will work ok in iPhones with no modification.

The update will work ok in iPhones with Installer.app (although it gets wiped out. The apps seem to remain in the iPhone, but they won’t appear in your screen.)

The update will work ok in unlocked iPhones, but it will return your iPhone to the activation screen. From there, no activation is possible. The iPhone doesn’t get bricked but, if you want to keep using it, don’t update your iPhone.

This has been confirmed with both anySIM and iPhone Sim Free.

“Third-party applications won’t work after the update” (confirmed by Dev Team.)

“Firmware 1.1.1. relocks iPhone properly” (confirmed by Dev Team.)

Unlocked iPhones updated to 1.1.1 will work with legit AT&T cards (confirmed by Natetrue)

iPhoneSimFree, the pay-method , reports that the their SIM unlocking solution doesn’t hang your iPhone at the activation stage. You can still activate with an AT&T SIM, but other SIMs won’t work after activation—you’ll have to wait for a new jailbreak for that.

Are you going to wait for a new jailbreak, or you need some of this updates like the Support for TV Out?

Update:According to Jesus Diaz on Gizmodo-

Here`s a video of the firmware update process with my unlocked iPhone (done with iPhone Sim Free.) You can see the result at the end: activation limbo (unless you have a legal AT&T card and a contract. Unlike me and all international users who have unlocked their iPhones.)

Youtube

If you don`t want your iPhone on Activation limbo, just wait. You waited all this time for a free unlock right? Now you need to wait with your unlocked iPhone. Is that hard?

Lock or not to Unlock that´s the Question

lockorunlock.png

The cat and mouse battle officially started and this is Apple posture against iPhone unlocking.

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone’s software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.

Don’t worry, its all okay and cool. You just need to stay away from the firmware update. Who needs the WiFi Music Store? Only Apple needs it so he can make money!

Just don’t update your firmware and you are good to go. Or there is another way you can follow, but you need to wait until next week, because the iPhone Dev Team is coding a tool which will be able to recover your nck counter and seczones that enables you to restore your phone to a Factory-like state. That’s pretty uhu?

If you have an unlocked iPhone my advice is to stay away from the firmware update, and wait for a solution, that I will inform here. It may be convenient to subscribe to my feed so you can get updates on the brand that you love and hate.
